I disagree with the fact that he hates a large back catalog because even during the ToT tour, they only played a handful of ToT tracks and still reverted to the usual Wicked Game, Join Me, BABL, ect.  I've seen plenty of bands that only play the newest album or two, and then a couple of older hits. They could have done with with any of the later tours if they really wanted to.
Come love me 'till it hurts, dance the neon noir with me.

The only reason we pine away for the setlists of old is because the band simply had less material to choose from, and thus they were playing a larger variety of songs in order to fill time because they had no other choice. The truth is, though, that HIM setlists and shows have always been very formulaic. Over the years the setlist has transitioned into the greatest hits setlist that we know today, but older shows were the same exact way just with different songs replacing the ones that hadn't been written yet. Certain songs got played all the time still. There were one off premieres and songs that they dropped after a short time of playing just like they do today. After they were done promoting a new album, they dropped most of the new songs except for the singles. Wash, rinse, repeat. It certainly doesn't change the fact that the current setlist is a borefest or make it any better. With more songs you would expect more of a variety, but it's also not out of line with what they've done in the past.

who know what is really on his mind?
Of course back in the days they usually played even not released new written songs so they practiced it live and they saw the reaction of the people to these songs. Ville mentioned it many times. Yeah they stopped doing this because of bootlegs. Ville said that too. When he was so pissed? In 2004 when there was this minute long video of And Love Said No on the internet wasnt it? I still have that video somewhere i believe
Also the less materials they had they were forced to play pretty much everything. But even with 3 or 4 albums  released, they never performed certain songs - do we have informations about Dont fear the reaper, Love you like i do, dont close your heart, the 9th circle, heaven tonight? I think not. And there are songs that they performed only while "practicing" while writing to see if they work : I Love You, In Love And Lonely, Again, You Are the One, Beautiful. Or songs like One Last Time that they did only few times and dropped them immediately, something like Loves Requiem in 2014.....
And also The Beginning of the end, Our diabolikal Rapture, these were stopped in 2000 actually..... And Our Diabolikal Rapture was later played in 2002 if i am right, correct me if i am wrong.
This was still in the era when they did not have 8 albums out, large catalog and were forced to play just hits.... I think the reaction of the crowd played very important role in Villes opinion on if to play or not to play the certain song. Ville said that in some interview or on the video about some song that was proposed to him to bring back to the setlist and he said that "nah, that one just didnt work live". If it was Circle of fear or something like that i would lie, but there was a video i think of it somewhere.
This still makes no full and logical sense why they retired for example "Resurrection". This has nothing to do with the fact that its my favorite song. No, but from the videos from Spain and Portugal gigs in June, the crowd pretty much loved the song. People screaming, singing very loudly and after the song the applause was huge. Yet they retired it very quickly, after only 5 gigs. In Miljoonarock they already didnt have it in the setlist. Now we have Stigmata already retired, Pretending seems to be retired too. The same situation was here in 2009/2010, they performed And Love Said No on Helldone and in februaray they had it printed on the paper setlist, but they never played it. They only played it on the soundcheck with RHIMA. I doubt that ANd Love Said No was that bad or the crowd reaction was lame to the song on the 2009 Helldone.
My personal opinion is that Ville is a jerk and every single detail that makes him insecure or he just simply expected to sound better he sees it as a huge problem and thats why some songs are just "album fillers". I can imagine he simply listened to the soundboard recording of the performance of Stigmata at some point and he hated it, maybe he thought he sounded bad so its retired...
the same i imagine with the rest of the dead songs that we will never hear live in this life.
Its not about "hating" but "it just doesn work live"..... that kind of thing. When Ville feels insecure, his performance is not so well. With the songs like Wicked Game, RHIMA, Join me, and i could name the entire current Farewell setlist, he is pretty much strong on it.
And another thing is that they are lazy. I think Mige confessed this in one interview, that they are lazy to practice and play old songs. I think this is a huge reason - there is no need to practice songs like Farewell setlist at all, maybe one session before the tour and thats it. And with the Farewell tour - there is really no need to give some extra effort to it, right?.... just play the "best of" and thats it. Everyone knows these songs and "we cant just skip" RHIMA, Join Me, Wicked Game...

I have seen them probably 20 times since going to the very first US show in 2004. I'm going to the last ever US show in ny and was hoping to hear one or two songs I haven't heard live..im excited to hear the usual songs one more time but I'm am sad that I won't get to hear something I haven't heard in a long time

That's the interview I was referencing too I think. You are probably right about feeling 'insecure' on some songs, although honestly I think it's strange given that some of the current setlist Ville has struggled with vocally in the past, not always but sometimes BABL sounds really strained as an example. Whereas Resurrection and Stigmata sounded like they were more comfortable in comparison.

The band poorly conditioned fans in the states over the years. In the early 2000s while they were building their fan base, the hits were needed to get people to the shows. That's fair. Problem was they kept doing that tour after tour. And casual fans were never introduced to the "non-hits"

On a positive note, on the eve of the band's final show stateside, here's a little trinket I was beyond fortunate to receive. Handed out to friends of the band, crew, and those deemed worthy. Only about 100 made - 1.5" challenge coin. Was also seen in the "Final Three" video posted online.

I've been waiting to hear some information on those. My brother and I received one at the Anaheim show after I was saying farewell to my friend. He's been one of the band's concert photographers for the last several years. He surprised me with it and I never got the chance to ask him where it came from and if it was even for sale anywhere. Thanks for the informative post! I'll forever cherish it because it's probably the last piece of HIM merchandise I'll ever have received or purchased. :)

Final Three video?

That is quite a cool little piece of HIM history. Congrats on you two getting one. I wonder how much the first one will sell for on eBay. You know someone's going to try to flip theirs right away for a small fortune.

Is it weird I noticed immediately that you changed your avatar? That Haggard one you had was awesome and super nostalgic for me whenever I would see it.

I thought 10 years was long enough. But since it has fans, I reverted back. Glad people notice the little things

new interview

The U.S. leg of the tour ends tomorrow night, November 17, in New York. One can only imagine the fury of the crowd when the final notes of ?When Love And Embrace,? which has been the closer throughout this tour, fill Hammerstein Ballroom.
This part is  bit  inaccurate bit I guess I'll see tonight

I don't miss the days of standing outside all day (usually in the freezing cold it seems; what's with the guys and their fondness for winter US tours, reminds them of home?) to get a good spot.

Enjoy the show! It'll be nice to have a recording of the last US show ever, if all goes well hopefully. Now if we could just get the first. I was on the right track at one point, but that's a story for a different day.

Same setlist encore rebel yell and when love and death embrace, full audio and almost all video issues with camera overheating so a few parts messed up, hopefully it sounds good
