I didn't realize so many people put Dsbh so far down on their lists. No love, man.
From what I understand, none of them enjoyed working on that album and it nearly brought them to the point of breaking up. I suppose that's one reason why they don't play DSBH songs live all that much nowadays. It's a shame. To me, it's the quintisential HIM album. You've got your "singles", you've got a straight up rocker, you've got ballads, and you've got atmosphere oozing all over the place. If there is someone out there that has never heard HIM before, you can have them listen to DSBH from start to finish and they will hear a variety of sides of the band.
Their first three albums make the definitive HIM experience. In my view, Love Metal wrote the blueprint and laid the groundwork (that they will likely never stray from) for all following releases: Dark Light, Venus Doom, Screamworks, and Tears on Tape. In my opinion, Tears on Tape is their best album, “post-Deep Shadows”.
