maybe i need to clarify a bit.

a)how can anyone judge a damn song, let alone the future of a band by a 30 sec clip?!
b)I love when a band changes just as much as the next guy.
c)I think there are alot of people out there that put themselves in a catch 22. When a band changes their sound, ppl complain that "its not like their old stuff" or "they've lost it". BUT when a band keeps on putting out the same sounding album 2-3 times in a row people complain about how they're not being original and they are just sticking with a formula they know that works.

I'm not saying everyone in this thread fits the description above. I'm not pointing fingers at anyone. just making a general statement.

I don't have a problem with change. My only gripe is when it's for all the wrong reasons. They're obviously trying to make a name for themselves in the states. I want them to be successful here. I really do. But at what cost? I don't want them to sacrifice their gothic European roots for something that's considered more accessible.

I can say with a straight face that what I heard from the sample didn't sound like HIM, save for Ville's voice belting out the lyrics. What I heard sounded a lot like the contrived drivel I hear all the time on the radio. And you want to know why? Because Matt Squire produces that sort of shit. I've never been a fan of it. Why would I be now?

great new song! Ville's voice songs amazing. burton gives the perfect atmosphere. mige bass is turned up more in the mix and is groovy. linde's guitar work and range of style never ceases to amaze me. and Mr. Gas is just solid sounding.

loved the girl moaning in the background. probably got a real girl to sit in the studio while they recorded it

haha probably. im with you in a few ways man the lyrics seem forced, guitars are somewhat simplistic along with the drums. real step back from venus doom. yes it sounds like razorblade romance a bit but to say that this song would be on that album is a joke. kinda hoping this is the poppiest track on the album. anyone else notice that since razorblade romance weve had to put up with a really subpar HIM album before getting a truly amazing album. no offense to those of you who like DSBH but i hated it.

I feel like their first three albums were brilliantly executed. I love the first three to death. After Deep Shadows though, I feel like they've been on a steady decline. If I had to rate the albums in order, I'm afraid it wouldn't be very different from the order which they were released.

I was very disappointed after hearing the samples and my opinion still isn't that good after hearing the whole song.

Just like I had noticed, the chorus is, at best, bearable. The song has a very Alternative Pop/Rock structure in sense that uses a typical verse-chorus-verse form. This is actually quite frequent in HIM, the issue being the overall feeling of the song is also very Pop... and this is not that new. Pop is something that has been present in HIM quite a lot, but mixed with the sonority that makes HIM what it is. This time, that sound is quite absent...

The guitar has a little more room that I thought after hearing the samples, but is too clean and predictable. The keyboards mix the worst of 'DS&BH' and 'Dark Light' tendencies with some dispensable effects and arrangements... and instead of mysterious and haunting parts, there is this almost "happy" feeling to it. In a positive middle point, I really liked the bass...
The voice has some decent and refreshing moments but the chorus almost ruins it all in this department. Also the lyrics are somewhat a drawback in some sections and I wasn't really seeing this negative aspect coming since the lyrics have been one of the most interesting aspects of HIM's music, namely in 'Venus Doom'...

Now, what gives me some hope:
Many of the things I've pointed out as negative may come from the fact that this is a single. It's a shame that Ville is talking in interviews (like the one in Rock On Magazine) about a single that must be "radio-friendly" and that this "commercial" attitude is somehow back (after its almost non existence during the 'Venus Doom' era), but it might be just a small price to pay...
The positive aspects in the song like some guitar work, the voice in some verses and the bass might fit a lot better in less single-formatted songs. This is what I hope, at least.

Of course that, comparing the two first sights of the last albums, 'Venus Doom' had a lot more positive points even in its most accessible moments. The same if the compassion is made for 'Dark Light', adding the fact that the latter was also very Pop-oriented...

After a nasty surprise with the samples and just a slightly better view after hearing the whole thing I remain sceptical about this direction in HIM's music...

I've heard a lot of people say some pretty nasty things about the song. I personally am on the edge of it. It's got the right kind of HIM cheese that I dig, but there is like you said PhiLiz a "happy" feel and I don't know what to think.

A lot of people are going..."Oh god it's too pop..."

I say fuck it let them go as poppy and happy as they want to...and someday they might see that being pop princesses (and yes I mean princesses lol) sucks and hopefully we might hear something more interesting, better and perhaps a little return to the beginning. That is my hope out of all of this.

Then again I might be going into it too deep since this is only the first damn thing I have heard off the album. I am keeping my fingers crossed for hidden goodies that aren't "singles" cause I tend to not like those too much...overplayage and what not.

I thought the lyrics throughout Venus Doom were pretty bad aside from Sleepwalking. Am I the only one who liked the lyrical content from Dark Light? As for the new song, after listening to Heartkiller, Dark Light doesn't seem so poppy.

Things I liked (I've only listened twice so far):

-The intro. Sounds VERY similar to And Love Said No. It's like an homage, then Linde's guitar comes jamming in.
-Ville's voice overal. Sounds much more youthful than it has in years. Very energetic.
-Ville's "yelp". Love it, every time he does it!
-I like the ending after the last chorus. Wish they'd have expanded on that section.

Dislike:
The frankenstiens line. Feels forced.

Edit:
While this feels very poppy and commercial, it still retains the HIM sound. To me, it's no worse than some of the pop tracks off RR or DSBH. When I first heard WOAB, I thought it was too commercial. I don't feel this way with Heartkiller. Perhaps I'm used to it, I dunno. And really, is commercial all that bad?
