Screamworks: Love In Theory and Practice

We tell you all the essential details of what your favourite bands are up to in 2009 in the Hot 100. Todays edition lets you know what you can expect from the return of HIM.

?We?re in the songwriting phase, but I always am so it never stops, explains HIM frontman Ville Valo. The idea is to write number one hits songs? 13 of them, he adds with a wry smile. ?We?ll figure out who?ll produce it early next year and head into the studio in March or April. Hopefully we?ll be done by the festival season and be able to play new songs there. If the album doesnt come out in autumn or winter 2009, it'll be early 2010.

So what can we expect from the new HIM album?

I haven't talked to the band for long yet, but I want to keep the songs all under five minutes and make them really punky and direct. When I say punky I don?t mean sounding like punk, I mean punk in feel. Not so much ear candy. I love over-produced albums but we?ve never tried a more stripped-down, simple approach in a Search And Destroy Iggy Pop and the Stooges type vibe. It'll still be wanky and melancholy and have all those HIM elements, but just not so much ear candy. Venus Doom was quite a proggy album for us so I'm thinking of doing the opposite with this one.

And as he explains, being sober has brought out his inner bastard, which we will hear on the new material: ?I?m more pissed off and more aggressive. There?s no buffer between me and the real world so I?m the proper cunt I was meant to be.?

I really hope there is a new album
new album =  new tour.
And I could really do with a HIM gig sometime in the near future!

Not so much ear candy. [...]  a more stripped-down, simple approach[...]

Sounds cool. Looks like it'll be another album different from the rest.
And it seems we're going back to GLV sound :D

on the heartagram website this was said in kerrang...

Valo also went on to reveal that HIM have begun work on their seventh studio album and fans will be shocked by the band's new material.

"It'sa bit of a departure from me this time around," he said. "This time everything is very direct and straight to the point.'

I'm not sure if i like the way this sounds.  But none the less, i strongly believe they won't ever dissapoint me.

Frankly, I expect much to come of them in Latin America in 2010. The public here is very large, they will be well received here!

my guess with the way ville's been talking about it they are gonna do what they were originally trying to do with deep shadows and brilliant highlights don't be surprised if this new album comes out sounding like the dsabh demos. that's my prediction and actually i wouldn't mind if they did do that add some more sentiment thast the one thing i thought venus doom was lacking a bit.

really the only thing I can hope for is that there will be more than 9 tracks on the album like Venus Doom (8 really I think because Song or Suicide wasn't very long).  Now I'm not saying anything bad about Venus doom, because it is an excellent album, I just was left longing for at least one more full song on it.

But aside from asking for more than 9 tracks, I'm not worried too much about the new album, because they have yet to let my ears down when I listen to their music  ;D

would have been great to hear something MORE ear-candy again... venus doom sounded really "adult", there is missing some of the special teenage feeling you had when you listened to HIM some years ago :-(

we hear the same things out of every rock artist's mouth when they put out an album

"it's gonna be stripped down/harder/punkier/etc."

'stripped down' has to be an artists favorite term when they are putting out a new album

they always make a statement like that, and in my opinion, it usually doesn't change the band sound too much
call me crazy, but i think we are gonna hear a HIM album that we are all not gonna be too shocked by crazy changes
i feel like not many changes will be made, they are still gonna sound like HIM
somewhere around the sound of DSBH or VD, but we all know its gonna be love metal

so nothing to worry about

he did say that
and he also said that same thing for Dark Light, cause the songs were shorter

i dont listen to ville as much as i used to, cause he's kinda said the same thing over and over again.
like how he mentioned in this interview how he wanted a Iggy Pop - Search and Destroy type of feel
I love over-produced albums but we've never tried a more stripped-down, simple approach in a Search And Destroy Iggy Pop and the Stooges type vibe. he said that same thing about Buried Alive By Love in the 2003 interviews of him on the red couch in the black room wearing the rolling stones shirt

BABL did sound alot like that song, but he's been kind of repeating himself these last few years

maybe i've just seen too many interviews
