Venus Doom - Type O influenced?
« on: November 13, 2007, 03:40:38 AM »
Does anyone else notice the similarities with Type O Negative? such as the doomy parts where Ville's voice drops to a baritone and it just drags along? I think those parts are awesome, cause I love Type O.

I loved the doom-y parts in Venus Doom though, they were great. I like Type O probably a little more... although HIM's Razorblade Romance is one of my favourite albums to date (in my top 3)

HIM didn't lose their originality because even though it is more similar to the doom sounds of type o negative, type o is still a hell of a lot darker and more melancholic.  HIM kind of went back to their greatest love songs volume 666 days with a newer, fresher sound.

I think HIM's album which is most influenced by Type O Negative is - obviously - 'Greatest Lovesongs Vol.666'. Mostly by works like 'Bloody Kisses' and 'October Rust', both absolutely masterpieces of the Gothic Metal genre.
With the first album, HIM had a different approach on the genre (some might simplify this and say it was a little less heavier, but I think overall was, above all, different and quite unique), but the feeling of the album had some things in common with the previous mentioned albums...

I don't see 'Venus Doom' that way... Sure it's "heavy" and kind of "dirty" (I used inverted commas because this definitions are usually used kind of naively...) but it has a rock-oriented sound. The first album was clearly more Metal-oriented and consequently more close to what Type O Negative did.

I can hear some Doom elements on 'Venus Doom' (excuse me for being redundant) but the "other side" of the sound is... Rock. Pure and simple. Something like Doom Rock is fitting to describe, although, it's necessary to keep in mind the descriptiveness of the term and not the its musically connotative nature...
