Hello people
I'm keen to start listening to some Death Metal. I'm looking for some help as to where to start. What bands/albums should I be checking out?
I'm not sure if any of you are fans of the genre but it would be great to get some help. :)

It all depends on what kind you're looking for. Personally, I'm not a fan of the genre as a whole (or the majority of metal sub-genres for that matter), though oddly enough, one of my favorite bands of all time is Acid Witch.
Many people argue that they're not death metal, which I suppose is true, as the only death metal qualities they have are the guttural vocals...the music is, for the most part, lacking the speed and blastbeat drumming as well. Its a blend of psychedelic, doom, stoner, and the aforementioned death growls. One of the main draws this band had for me was the horror themed lyrics and (especially) the Halloween imagery and sound effects.
If you're not looking for overtly serious stuff, give them a try.

my favorite: burzum, pagan reign, hate forest, darkspace, blut aus nord, PESTE NOIRE!!
i would say Peste Noire aka K.P.N. is the best! maybe i like it more than HIM 8)

me neither, black metal is not about understanding words because of the way of "singing" ;D
if you dont listen to poser "black" metal bands like Cradle of Filth or Children of Bodom, then you wont understand a word
and it is fine, because black metal is more about the atmosphere , most lyrics are in black metal about darkness, evil, hatred, satan, it depends if you are listening to orthodox black metal or ambient black metal or NS BM ......

btw if you wont fall into the Black Metal
you should definitely try Bathory! you will find black metal here (the first albums) ,you will find thrash metal , and you will find excellent viking rock/metal (very EPIC!) . Rip Quorthon too! :'(

Ideally, I'd be looking for some Black Metal where the music is amazing. I don't want anything where the lyrics are racist. Based on this, if you have any bands or albums to recommend then I'd be forever grateful. I actually have some Cradle of Filth and Children of Bodom haha. This isn't down to me being a poser but they asre the more well publicised bands.
I have got some Blut Aus Nord which I'm enjoying listening to. :)

yeah Blut Aus Nord is pretty amazing band!
well it wasnt meant anything badly what i sad about Bodoms and CoF .... actually true black metalheads dont consider it as black metal
i would recommend to check (at least on youtube) few songs of each of these:
Blut Aus Nord (obviously done)
Burzum (notorious one-man "band" )
Darkthrone
Bathory
Drudkh
old stuff from Ulver (but the new is experimental and interesting too)
Pagan Reign (one of the best folk/pagan bands i have heard - really 100/100)
Peste Noire - excellent black metal from France!
Darkspace - pure darkness from Switzerland (atmospheric like hell)
Gorgoroth - i am not a fan, i have never been but some of their music is really great especially Twilight of the Idols album
Summoning - !!!!!!!! AMAZING , EPIC , melodic, Perfect in every possible way
